Unpublished material relating to Robert Boyle's 'memoirs for the natural history of human blood'
The text of Robert Boyle's 'Designe about natural historyâ
This publication presents a new text of Robert Boyleâs prescriptions for the writing of natural history, compiled in 1666 and partially divulged in 1684, but unpublished till modern times. The current edition restores the text to its correct order for the first time, and adds various cognate documents, including certain sections of the âDesigneâ which survive elsewhere among the Boyle Papers at the Royal Society and are here first published. The result is to supply a significant document for understanding the evolution of Baconian method during the formative years of the Royal Society.
The editors are Michael Hunter, Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London, and Director of the Robert Boyle Project, and Peter Anstey, Professor of Early Modern Philosophy at the University of Otago, New Zealand.

Business on television: continuity, change and risk in the development of televisionâs âbusiness entertainment formatâ
This article traces the evolution of what has become known as the business entertainment format on British television. Drawing on interviews with channel controllers, commissioners and producers from across the BBC, Channel 4 and the independent sector this research highlights a number of key individuals who have shaped the development of the business entertainment format and investigates some of the tensions that arise from combining entertainment values with more journalistic or educational approaches to factual television. While much work has looked at docusoaps and reality programming, this area of television output has remained largely unexamined by television scholars. The research argues that as the television industry has itself developed into a business, programme-makers have come to view themselves as [creative] entrepreneurs thus raising the issue of whether the development off-screen of a more commercial, competitive and entrepreneurial TV marketplace has impacted on the way the medium frames its onscreen engagement with business, entrepreneurship, risk and wealth creation
Television, business entertainment and civic culture
This short commentary piece arises from completing an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)âfunded research project into the relationship between representations of business on factual television in the United Kingdom and the publicâs perception and understanding of entrepreneurship. What we would like to do here is reflect on some of the implications of this work with specific regard to the research agenda around the media and civic culture. We remain convinced that even in the digital age, popular television remains a central entry point into debates about the relationship between broader civic and political culture
Computer program for thermal analysis of shadow shields in a vacuum
Computer program determines temperature profiles and heat transfer rates for shadow shielded cryogenic tank. Tank, shields, and thermal radiation heat source are all axisymmetric. Thermal analysis considers varying shield and tank temperatures, surface properties, and geometric arrangements. Similar heat source properties are also considered
Navier-Stokes analysis of turbine blade heat transfer
Comparisons with experimental heat transfer and surface pressures were made for seven turbine vane and blade geometries using a quasi-three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes analysis. Comparisons are made for cases with both separated and unseparated flow over a range of Reynolds numbers and freestream turbulence intensities. The analysis used a modified Baldwin-Lomax turbulent eddy viscosity mode. Modifications were made to account for the effects of: (1) freestream turbulence on both transition and leading edge heat transfer; (2) strong favorable pressure gradients on relaminarization; and (3) variable turbulent Prandtl number heat transfer. In addition, the effect of heat transfer on the near wall model of Deissler is compared with the Van Driest model
Photometry of 40 LMC Cepheids
We present V and I_c CCD photometry for 40 LMC Cepheids at 1 to 3 epochs.
This represents a significant increase in the number of LMC Cepheids with
-band data, and, as we show, is a useful addition to the sample which can be
used to calibrate the period--luminosity relations in these important bands
Step Scaling with off-shell renormalisation
We make use of twisted boundary conditions for off-shell Rome-Southampton
renormalisation. This allows to define the vertex function precisely, at a
fixed physical momentum that need not be one of the Fourier modes of a
simulation. This definition includes choosing the orientation with respect to
lattice axes, and so lattice artefacts including breaking then
have a valid Symanzik expansion. Excellent statistical precision is afforded by
volume plane-wave sources, enabling both a theoretically and statistically
clean continuum limit to be taken. Thereafter all dependence can be
unambiguously identified as continuum anomolous running.
The use of non-exceptional momenta has been found to greatly reduce the
dependence of non-perturbative vertex functions on both mass and . We
illustrate how this can be developed into a practical scheme for step-scaling
the RI/SMOM approach with initial results. The size of the possible steps is
continuous, rather than discrete allowing one to take arbitrarily small steps,
and the scheme inherits from RI/MOM the property that it is easy to implement

An AdS/QCD holographic wavefunction for the rho meson and diffractive rho meson electroproduction
We show that AdS/QCD generates predictions for the rate of diffractive rho
meson electroproduction that are in agreement with data collected at the HERA
